"Häxan" was a 1922 Danish silent film from director Benjamin Christensen. Based on his reading of the Malleus Malificarum, "Häxan" shows how medieval superstitions led to the abuse and torture of women and the mentally ill during the European witch-hunts. Not surprisingly, the film was banned in the United States for scenes of violence and sexual perversion.
